Cerar, Sister Maria Goretti, 89, a Sister of St. Martha of Antigonish, died at Bethany, the motherhouse of the Congregation, on Saturday, March 3, 2012. She was in the 51st year of her religious life.
Born in Ljubljana, Republic of Slovenia, she was the eldest of thirteen children of the late Franc and Maria (Potocnik) Cerar.
Sister entered the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Martha on February 15, 1959, pronounced her first vows on February 15, 1961, and her perpetual profession of vows on August 15, 1966. After her profession of vows, Sister assisted in homemaking services at St. Charles Convent, Dominion, Bethany and St. Martha’s Convent on St. Francis Xavier University Campus in Antigonish. For twenty-nine years she served as sacristan at St. Augustine’s Seminary, Scarborough, ON.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by two siblings in infancy; sisters Ann Besko and Darinka; brothers Bozidar, Frank, and John. Sister Maria Goretti is survived by sisters Antonia Khan, Dr. Gloria Bratina, Florence Petrovcic and brothers Charles and Miro.
The remains will be resting at Bethany, beginning Monday, March 5, at 1:15 p.m. A Celebration of Vigil will be held on the same evening at 7:30. Liturgy of Christian Burial will take place on Tuesday, March 6, at 2:00 p.m. in Bethany Chapel.
