Appointment of new Bishop for Saint-Paul

(CCCB – Ottawa)… His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI today named the Reverend Paul Terrio as Bishop of Saint-Paul, Alberta. At the time of his appointment, he was President of the Newman Theological College in theArchdiocese of Edmonton. He succeeds the Most Reverend Luc Bouchard who was appointed Bishop of Trois-Rivières, Quebec, on February 2, 2012. Bishop Bouchard remained Diocesan Administrator of Saint-Paul until his official installation as Bishop of Trois-Rivières on March 26, 2012. Since then, Father Peter Tran has served as the Diocesan Administrator of Saint-Paul.

Bishop-Elect Paul Terrio was born on May 4, 1943, in Montreal, Quebec. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts and a teaching certificate from ConcordiaUniversity. He holds a licentiate in theology from the University of Montreal and a licentiate in philosophy from the Pontifical Gregorian University, Rome. He was ordained to the priesthood on May 23, 1970. As a priest, he worked as the Parochial Vicar of the Cathedral of Montreal from 1970 to 1975 and then was the pastor of St. Peter’s Parish from 1995 to 2002 and of Holy Trinity Parish from 2002 to 2012 in the Archdiocese of Edmonton.

Since 2010, he has also served as the Diocesan Director of Vocations for the Archdiocese of Edmonton, and was member of the Clergy Formation and Education Committee since 2008. He was part of the Seminary Formation Team of the Saint Joseph Seminary in Edmonton from 1994 to 1997. He has also served as spiritual director to seminarians over the years. He was named President of Newman Theological College in 2012.

The Diocese of Saint-Paul has 53 parishes and missions, with a Catholic population of 56,655, which is served by 10 diocesan priests, 11 priests who are members of religious communities, 18 Religious Sisters, eight permanent deacons and four lay pastoral assistants.
